Before I started modelling my robot in Maya my journey started with a pencil and a piece of graph paper where I had to draw my robots profile views ( side, front, back and bottom) This ensured that my robot was all to scale and how I wanted it because when drawing I used a ruler and the graph paper to ensure everything was straight and in proportion such as the front view and the side view. Because it wasn't perfect, I used Photoshop to alter its dimensions so that they matched and then I exported them as JPEGs so that u could put it on a canvas to act as guidelines when modelling. I made the image the right size by various calculations.
The next lesson I was experimenting with different bases and the main body of my robot as from tutorials and having used maya before I knew that it is best to start off with blocks rather than spheres and then press the short cut '3' for add divisions and turn the block into a spherical object and when cutting/ extruding it is more even, however I ended up using 2 spheres so that they are separate (top and movable bottom) for realism.
Here is where I applied a texture to help me UV map my robot
